Dug deep.
Laid right.

Beckwith Groundworks lays driveways, patios and gardens across Surrey in block, resin, natural stone and timber. We excavate properly, bed it on a sub-base that holds, and finish a joint you would be happy to kneel on.

Who we are

A groundworks firm that finishes what it digs.

Beckwith started in 2010, when James Beckwith left a large civils contractor to lay work the way he had always argued it should be laid: dug to the right depth, bedded on a proper sub-base, and pointed by the same hands that excavated it.

Fourteen years on, it is still a yard, not an office. James works every site with his son Tom and a small core crew. The proof is in the driveways and terraces holding flat across Leatherhead, Dorking and Cobham, years after the diggers left.

Every job starts with a spade in the ground and an honest look at what is under it. No two plots dig the same, so no two quotes are guessed.

What we do

Four trades, dug and laid by one yard

From the first cut of the digger to the last bit of pointing, the same crew carries the job. Nothing is handed off to another trade halfway through.

Driveways

Block paving, resin-bound and natural stone driveways, excavated and compacted in layers to the depth the ground asks for. Edged, drained and pointed to take the weight without rutting.

Garden Landscaping

Retaining walls, sleeper beds, paths, turfing and planting borders that hold a slope and frame the hard work. We lift levels, sort the drainage, and leave a garden that drains and grows.

Fencing & Edging

Close-board fencing, sleeper walls, sett courses and stone edging that hold a line and tie the whole scheme together. Posts set in concrete, edges haunched, nothing left to lean over the first winter.

What we lay

The yard, laid out.

A garden is only as good as what goes under and over it. These are the materials we keep stock of, and the ground each one is best put to. Come to the yard and you can hold every one before it is in your drive.

An overhead arrangement of hard-landscaping samples: terracotta block paviours, buff sandstone, honey resin gravel, granite setts, oak sleeper and slate chippings

Clay paviours

Kiln-fired clay blocks that keep their colour for decades. Laid in herringbone for a drive that locks tight under load.

Riven sandstone

Indian and Yorkstone in buff, grey and silver. Hand-cut, full mortar bed, brushed joints for a patio that lasts.

Resin-bound gravel

Warm bound aggregate over a permeable base. Smooth underfoot, free-draining, and no loose stone to track inside.

Granite setts

Cropped granite for crisp edges and borders. The hardest-wearing line on the site and a clean frame for any surface.

Oak sleepers

Weathered timber sleepers for raised beds, low retaining and steps. Set on a concrete footing so they hold the soil for good.

Slate & gravel

Decorative slate and gravel for borders, paths and low-maintenance ground, laid over a membrane that keeps the weeds down.

How we build

The same job, laid in five stages.

Most paving fails from the ground up, not the top down. We work each stage in order, and we do not skip the ones you cannot see once it is finished.

01

Site visit

Dig a hole, look at the ground

James walks the plot, checks the falls and the drainage, and digs a test hole to see what is actually under the surface. No hard sell. We want to understand the job before we put a price on it.

02

Written quote

Itemised, within 48 hours

A full quote on one page: excavation, sub-base, materials, edging, drainage, labour and waste removal, each costed separately. No vague day-rates, and nothing added later without your say-so.

03

Excavate & sub-base

The part nobody sees

We dig out to the right depth, lay and compact the sub-base in layers, and set the falls so water runs where it should. This is where a surface is won or lost, so it is the stage we never rush.

04

Lay & point

Block, stone, resin or timber

The surface goes down on a proper bed, edges haunched in, joints brushed or pointed tight. The same crew that dug the job lays it, so the line on the drive and the cut at the edge are the same decision.

05

Clear & hand over

Snags sorted before the invoice

We sweep the site, take away every last bit of spoil, and walk you round the finished work. Any snags are sorted before the invoice is raised, and you get straight aftercare advice for the surface.

Why Beckwith

Where the difference actually shows

A lot of firms read the same on paper. Here is where ours shows up in the ground, years after the diggers have gone.

Proper sub-base depth

The reason most paving sinks within five years is a weak base. We dig to the correct depth and compact in layers. Slower to lay, flat for the long run.

No sub-contractors

Every person on your site is on the Beckwith crew. We do not outsource to gangs we cannot stand behind, so the standard holds from the first dig to the last joint.

A number that answers

A direct line to James, not a call centre. A question on a Saturday morning gets answered the same day. It should not be rare, but it is.

Start and finish dates that hold

We quote a start date and a finish estimate and stick to them. If weather or ground forces a delay, you hear it the moment we know, not on the morning.

A clean site, every day

Materials stacked neatly, the pavement kept clear, spoil taken away as we go. The neighbours notice, and so do the customers who call us back.

Itemised, honest pricing

You see the cost of every load of sub-base, every skip and every day's labour. Nothing gets bolted on at the end without it being agreed first.

Recent ground

A few jobs, in their own register

No two plots dig alike. A look across the range, from a herringbone drive to a stepped stone terrace.

Imagery on this page shows the materials and standard of finish the yard works to. It is not a record of named completed commissions.

In their words

The ground holds. So do the customers.

"James quoted on the Thursday, started the Monday, and the drive was finished by the Wednesday. Eleven years on it still sits dead flat. We have sent four neighbours his way."
Sandra
Leatherhead
"Three firms quoted. Beckwith were not the cheapest, but the only ones who explained what they would do to the sub-base and why. Two years on, we understand exactly why that mattered."
Robert and Claire
Cobham
"Tom came back six months after our patio because he had spotted a slab that had lifted in the frost. Re-laid it, no charge, no argument. That tells you the sort of yard they run."

Where we work

Across Surrey, from the yard out

Based at the stone yard in Leatherhead, we take on work right across Surrey and into the bordering counties for the right job.

Most of it comes from word of mouth, which means there is usually a finished drive or terrace to walk past not far from where you live. Ask us and we will point you to one.
